Rationale

With the advent of minimally invasive approaches in thoracic surgery – both videoassisted and robotic – complex combined approaches to pleural cavities and mediastinum are more and more rarely performed, thus causing a lack in the training of thoracic surgery trainees and a concrete risk of deskilling in more experienced surgeons.
The aim of this cadaveric course is to bridge the gap between theory and actual clinical practice, offering a practical knowledge of complex accesses to pleural cavities and mediastinum.
At end of this course, learners can expect to acquire the following skills:

• Basic anatomy principles

• Develop and improves knowledge and skills in dissection

• Bridge basic anatomical understanding with clinical applications in the field of extended thoracic surgery

• Build a strong foundation for safe surgical practice

Cadaveric session 2: complex approaches 14:00 – 16:00

• The Anterior Transclavicular approach (Dartevelle)
• The Anterior Transmanubrial approach (Grunenwald - Spaggiari)
• The Anterior Trap – door approach (Masaoka – Nomori)
• The Posterior approach (Shaw - Paulson)
• Modified Transmanubrial approach for thoracic outlet syndrome (San Gerardo)
